                 2.1 Cherry Tree
 

WRITE AN APPRECIATION OF THE POEM CONSIDERING THE FOLLOWING POINTS:

About the poem, poet and title.

 Cherry Tree is a narrative poem related to nature.  In this poem the poet narrates how cherry tree struggle to survived. The poet, Ruskin Bond is a nature lover. He has written hundreds of short stories, essays, novellas and more than thirty books for children. Title ‘Cherry Tree’ indicates that how trees are important in our life.

 Theme/ summary/gist of the poem.

The theme of the poem is that the poet had desire to plants and to have his own tree in spite  of many threats the tree grew and result so many birds and insects were  attracted and gave the poet abundant joy. Means those who are nurtured and cared for in life have a better chance of success (like the cherry Tree).  

  Poetic style/ language, poetic devices used in the poem.

In this interesting poem poet has used rhyme scheme aa, bb, cc ………. . The choice of simple words makes the language easy to understand and enjoy. Very simple language to understand ordinary reads can understand easily. The poetic devices used in the poem are Alliteration and some words that rhyme. Personification is also used in the poem to highlight the poetic effects.

The poem has colour image many things we can take to inspire from this poem is wonderful message are drawn. The poem is also a symbol for showing all challenges that one has to go through in life. The poet described the journey of the cherry tree and the feature of been able to resist all kinds of troubles in life, through all atmospheric problems brought by natural forces.

Message/ values/ morals in the poem.

-         The poem tells us to move forward towards success aims and dreams overcoming difficulties that we find in our way.

-         It has the message to persist in the struggle to achieve a goal.

-         Message of hope when one can only despair.

-         Message to love trees, plant trees and preserve trees.

-         Trees are very important for survival of the living organisms.

  Your opinion about the poem.

I like and enjoyed the poem.  It is a great poem which explains for better the relation between children and plants. I could memorize my childhood memories. I can learn that

Trees are best friends so at least one tree we can plant in our childhood stage.

 

                            2.2 THE SOWER

About the poem, poet and title.

The Sower’ is a translation of Victor Hugo’s poem.  It is translated by Toru Dutt from French to English. The Sower is a poem about a farmer who is sowing seeds. The sower is a poor old man and has seen many bad harvests in his life. However, he is still full of hope of having a bounteous harvest every time he tosses a grain. The dedication of the farmer his expressed in this poem. The title is very meaningful and clear.

Theme/ summary/gist of the poem.

This poem is about a farmer who is constantly working in his field with expectation of having a good harvest. To the farmer, the grain he sows in the field looks like precious metal. The sower is really working hard day and night to grow crops and earn the livelihood of his family. He is a patient farmer who is skilled in his work. He scatters the seeds and sow them and wait for the time of their reaping. It is a very work hard. He keeps working even though it is getting dark and the night falls. The poet admires this quality of the sower.

Poetic style/ language, poetic devices used in the poem.

The poet has used poetic devices like Alliteration, Imagery and symbolism to create the scene in the reader’s mind. The rhyme-scheme   is ab , ab providing a pleasing rhythm to read aloud. The poet has used simple language in this poem.

The Poem comes out of the real life situations that touched the poet’s heart. The remarkable use of landscapes, together with flora and fauna become the major notable things in this poem.

Message/ values/ morals in the poem.

-         This poem is a beautiful depiction of an old man and his conviction in life. He believed the best is yet to come and doesn't stop trying irrespective of the prevailing conditions. The poem emphasizes the importance of positive thinking and continuous chasing of goals. One needs the farmer for one’s survival.

Your opinion about the poem.

According to me the poem gives successfully the due respect to the farmers & they deserve such respect. We are proud of his hardwork & simple life.                    I also remembered  Mahatma Gandhiji’s message “Going towards  villages.”                                                                                                                                                      EAST OR WEST OUR FARMERS ARE BEST.

 

       2.3 THERE IS ANOTHER SKY

About the poem, poet and title.

There is Another Sky’ is an inspirational poem with a message of ‘never say-die.’ It is a Petrarchan sonnet with octave and sestet. The poem ends on an optimistic note. Emily Dickinson is an American poet of the 19th century. Title –‘There is Another Sky’, the poet wants to convey to the readers that beyond the physical sky, there lays an additional sky. Talking about 'sunshine' she says that that is yet another sunshine which has the potential to shine through the darkness.

 Theme/ summary/gist of the poem.

The theme or central idea of the poem is – comparison of two places. One is gloomy, dim, colourless and lonely. The poet’s brother may be in a place like this. She describes a serene, evergreen little forest under ‘another sky ’, with fresh flowers and humming bees. She has encouraged him to move on. One door closes another door opens .She is helping to inspire her brother to overcome life’s frustrations. She urges him to develop a positive attitude. She encourages her brother not to get depressed under any circumstances.

  Poetic style/ language, poetic devices used in the poem.

The poem is a Petrarchan sonnet. The octave (8 lines) describes the cold, faded forest while the sestet (6 lines) speaks of warm welcoming place the poet’s little garden. This kind of sonnet may have the rhyme scheme of –abba, abba, cdecde or cdcdcd. Dickinson often used slant rhyme & unconventional capitalization and punctuation. The language is little hard to understand the theme of the poem. The poetess has used different figures of speech like-Alliteration, inversion, hyperbole etc.

This is an inspirational poem with a message of ‘never say die’. The poet speaks of a place that has ‘another sunshine ’, is ‘serene and fair’, ‘ever green’, ‘a brighter garden’, has ‘unfading flowers, and a place where she can hear the ‘bright bee hum.’ The poet is describing Heaven where it is always serene, green and frost has not touched the flowers which never fade.  

Message/ values/ morals in the poem.

-         The message of positivity, optimism is spread through poem. Life is full of challenges. We must face the difficulties and overcome them. You should never lose your confidence in any situation. The message of hope - It is a message to her brother who is away and would encourage him not to give up, in case he was in despair.

Your opinion about the poem.

I am really inspired by reading this poem. I have learnt from this poem that ‘never get depressed’.    You should not give up under any circumstances .Effort is essential to success, not to give up.   Lastly I understand that-

       ‘IF ONE DOOR CLOSES, ANOTHER DOOR WILL OPEN’

                                               

      2.4   UPON WESTMINSTER BRIDGE

WRITE AN APPRECIATION OF THE POEM CONSIDERING THE FOLLOWING POINTS:

 About the poem, poet and title.

‘Upon Westminster Bridge’ is a Petrarchan sonnet in which William Wordsworth describes the beauty of the Bridge as seen at dawn from the Westminster Bridge, London. William Wordsworth was a major English Romantic poet. The title itself gives the reader an idea about the poet’s intention .Westminster Bridge is very famous bridge in London. The Poet depicts the beauty of London city in the early morning sunshine. Thus the title is apt.

 Theme/ summary/gist of the poem.

The poet’s description is mainly the gorgeous beauty of London city during early morning sunrise taking a pause on the bridge while crossing Thames River. The city is glittering in the clean smokeless air and the Thames flowing leisurely along before the vessels begin to sail. He begins to girdle the enormous beauty of the city and its stunning silence in the early morning. In short, the poet talks about various aspects while crossing the Westminster Bridge and the natural beauty that he witnesses.

 Poetic style/ language, poetic devices used in the poem.

The poem is a Petrarchan sonnet. The octave (8 lines) has the rhyme scheme abba   abba while the sestet (6 lines) has cdc  dcd  pattern. This kind of sonnet may have the rhyme scheme of –abba, abba, cdecde or cdcdcd. The poem’s beauty is in simple language. The poet has used different figures of speech like-Simile, hyperbole & personification etc.

The poem is petrarchan sonnet, and it's divided into two parts.
A). An octave - first 8 lines   
B.) A sestet - The second part - 6 lines.

-         The poet appreciates the beauty of the city, which looks serene early in the morning, especially without the usual noise and activity. It is a positive attitude seen by the poet in this poem..

Your opinion about the poem.

I learn that even sometime ordinary things can become special or praiseworthy. Poet’s imagination power and thinking of positive attitude makes the poem more interesting and pleasant. So I think that-

             2.5   NOSE VERSUS EYES

About the poem, poet and title.

Nose versus Eyes is a satire on the judiciary system. It also mocks at the stone blind justice in a humorous manner. William Cowper was one of the most popular 18th century English poets, composer, hymn writer, satirist, letter writer, essayist and translator. He wrote poetry about nature and everyday life. The sensory organs in the title, ‘Eyes versus Nose’ symbolize human behavior. 

  Theme/ summary/gist of the poem.

The human tendency of greed is depicted in this poem.  The argument was between Nose and Eyes to whom the spectacles belonged. The tongue argued the case skillfully while the ear listened as the judge. Lastly Judge gave the uncommon decision in a grave tone that whenever the Nose puts on his spectacles the Eyes must remain shut.

 Poetic style/ language, poetic devices used in the poem.

Nose versus Eyes is a satire as well as mocks on the judiciary system. The sensory organs are personified.

The Eyes -     claimant                                

The Nose   defendant        claiming ownership of the spectacles.

The Tongue- the lawyer

 The Ear -  the Judge. 

  The poem has many words and phrases related to legal field.

The rhyme scheme of the stanza is – abab , abab, abab, abab,-----

Criticism- on the judicial system with the help of sensory organs. 

The characters Eyes, Nose, Ear and tongue very aptly depicted.

The poem reminds us –Justice should be tempered with humanity & Decisions based purely on rules of the law book may end up being silly. Sometime our right claim doesn’t work or sometime legal system is not understood by the common people. But all depend on the exercise of lawyer and the Judge.

Your opinion about the poem.

This is a very interesting poem but related to court or law that’s why we cannot understand properly. It is very funny argument. End is uncommon and satirical.   I understood that-

             NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE IN THIS WORLD

 2.6   THE PLANNERS

About the poem, poet and title.

‘The Planners ’- we come to know how the planners achieve what they aim for. The poet  Boey Kim Cheng laments the constant development of Singapore. He focuses on the loss of human element in his surroundings. The poet Boey Kim Cheng is a Singapore-born Australian poet. He is a teacher. He is of Chinese descent. He is known as one of the most promising Singapore poets to emerge in the 1990s. The city has been taken over by the powerful people-politicians, industrialists, influential builders- all people who are looking for profits.  The title indicates there are plans for some activity.   

Theme/ summary/gist of the poem.

Taking the example of Singapore the poet described how the planners meticulously, slowly and surely wiped out the old cities, nature and history to build modern skyscrapers and other structures. For understanding this plan he has taken example of dentist when he repairs and removes teeth.

-The form of this poem is free verse.

-Due to free verse there is no rhyming scheme in this poem.

-The poet used Alliteration, Personification, Hyperbole, Climax, Paradox and Oxymoron figures of speech in this poem.

He depicts his idea in a simple language.

Poet seems to quietly disapprove of the way the past and the heritage are being wiped out. The poet used very short lines with meaningful words.

    Message/ values/ morals in the poem.

The poem shows how in the name of development or Modernization Without any emotion, the past heritage and some history are being wiped out. The lobby for this building activity comprises politicians, rich and powerful men of all sorts and citizens.

Your opinion about the poem.

I understood that we have to protect our monuments. Our young generation should be made aware of how beautiful and varied our culture is. So without any harm to our Nature, History and Culture we have to plan our cities.    So I know that-
