FEATURES –  

 

 -It is an Inspirational Poem

-It has four stanzas.

-Each quatrain has four lines.

-Each quatrain follows the rhyme scheme of –aabb

-The theme of the poem is - ‘One should consider one’s actions and deeds      carefully and plan accordingly for a better future’.

- The poem gives us a valuable message of hope, optimism, positivity, good work     & honesty.

BRAINSTORMING

 (A1)   Discuss with your friend how she/ he spent the whole day that was beneficial for others.

     As a volunteer I spent my whole day with police to help in traffic control.

(a)As a teacher I spent my whole day with uneducated persons to educate them.

(b)Being a good human, I celebrated my birthday with orphan children.

©Being a good citizen, I spent my whole day in cleanliness campaign in my city.

(A2) (i) ---‘was it well or sorely spent’? Explain the meaning and give illustrations.

 

-         In the last stanza, the poet/ speaker says that without doing something good for others we should not spend our day.   If we do not help other, it means we lose as well as waste one day of our life. In short without wasting our day we have to help others and should not leave the trail of kindness. Like a social worker, we should use every day of our life for the betterment of the needy.

           (ii) ‘As you close your eyes in slumber do you think that God

                 would say,

                 You have earned one more tomorrow by the work you did today?

                 Elaborate the idea expressed in these lines.

 

-         One should consider their actions carefully if one wants to see the next day because it is up to the almighty whether to allow you to see tomorrow. The last lines tell the readers that if they are unsure about their deeds of the day, how their day was spent, they can close their eyes in slumber and think about what God would say to them. If the readers feel that they have done well, tomorrow is assured.  Otherwise God may look at the actions and inactions carefully and you may not earn tomorrow.   

 

 

(iii) The poet suggests that one should do good to others. Complete the table by giving examples of doing good to following people.

(A4) (i) The poet has used different poetic devices like Alliteration and Interrogation in the poem.

  Identity them and pick out the lines.
